LIS is a research, curriculum development, and outreach initiative of the Latin American Studies Center and is designed to add to the quality and quantity of Latin American studies in pre-collegiate schools. The program has four objectives: to generate critiques of existing instructional materials; to cultivate a cadre of knowledgeable leaders who can integrate Latin American scholarship into their instructional practices; to cultivate partnerships with teachers, parents, community groups, associations, and students seeking to succeed in school; and to engage Spanish-speaking communities in transcultural dialogues with scholars, educators, and other members of the communities.
